Beacon Virtual 50+Expo Returns

For more than 20 years, the Beacon Newspapers has attracted thousands of people each year to its in-person 50+Expos in Montgomery County and Northern Virginia, featuring speakers, exhibits, health screenings, entertainment and more for people over 50.

Due to the widespread COVID virus, for the safety of readers and their family members, the Beacon has temporarily postponed those annual in-person events and offered a special virtual event online instead.

For the second year in a row, the Beacon has teamed up with the Baltimore County Department of Aging and the Howard County Office on Aging and Independence to present a unique Virtual 50+Expo that offers visitors a great deal of informative and entertaining content.

The event’s custom-designed website provides immediate, free access, 24/7, to dozens of classes, speakers and entertainers chosen especially for people over 50 in this area.

The event’s keynoter will be Diane Rehm, who hosted NPR’s The Diane Rehm Show for more than 30 years. Rehm will engage with Beacon publisher Stuart Rosenthal in a discussion about her broadcast career and the books she has written.

A second keynote conversation will take place between Rosenthal and Dr. Mark Warshawsky, former Deputy Commissioner of Social Security, about the future of Social Security and private pensions.

In addition, the online expo will include video demonstrations and classes on tai chi, yoga, cooking, nutrition, dance and more.

More than a dozen expert speakers will address health and wellness, legal matters and estate planning, employment and volunteer opportunities, money and investments, retirement housing options and travel.

Entertainment will cover an equally broad range, from classical music to rock and roll to comedy.

The Virtual 50+Expo will also provide useful information from dozens of informative exhibitors — including government agencies, nonprofits and area businesses offering products and services to older adults and their families.

To enable area residents to enjoy this wealth of material, the Beacon Virtual 50+Expo will remain free and accessible day and night for three months — from November 1, 2021 through January 31, 2022. So, mark your calendar and plan to visit frequently. Random door prize drawings will also be held throughout the period.

Sponsors whose support helps make this free event possible include Gold Sponsor AARP; Silver Sponsors Holy Cross Health, CIGNA and Maplewood Park Place, and Bronze Sponsors, Family & Nursing Care, GBMC, Lorien Health, Maryland Relay, Maryland Vascular Specialists, Mid-Atlantic ADA Center, Pepco and Residences at Vantage Point.
