Monday Morning Speaker Hilaire R. Henthorne, M. Div., J.D., Esq.

Long-term unemployment is scary, demoralizing and isolating.  No one can really understand what it’s like unless he/she has experienced it personally.  I have been laid off with no notice while working in the corporate sector, I have been employed at a government agency during a reduction in force, and I endured a year of long-term unemployment after graduating from seminary as a second-career adult.

My talk will look at the impact of unemployment from a psychological, emotional, spiritual and physical perspective, as I experienced it.  I will not offer any quick fixes or pretend to have “the answers” as to how one copes with long-term unemployment.  There is no “one size fits all” prescription for getting through something as difficult as this.  I will, however, share my story and talk about what helped me get through my own particularly difficult year:  my volunteer work and my faith.  My talk will emphasize the benefits of finding ways to keep perspective, reclaim your sense of purpose and self-worth, and to feel less alone in your struggles and challenges.

BIO: Hilaire has lived and worked in the Washington, D.C. metro area for 25 years, first as an attorney, then as a solo pastor, and currently as a professionally-trained career and life coach.  She received her law degree from the Catholic University of America, and practiced law for 12 years, both in private practice and with the federal government.  She served on the staff of the Chief Counsel for the U.S. Secret Service and as Counsel to the Inspector General of the U.S. International Trade Commission. Two years ago, Hilaire launched a coaching business:  Passionate Purpose Coaching.  In this capacity, she partners with highly motivated individuals to forge a link between what they love (their passion) and what they do best (their purpose).  She offers a wide variety of coaching services, including: job/career transitions; work/life balance; stress and/or time management; vision, planning and goal setting; women’s wellness; and communication skills.

Plan to join us after the meeting for networking.  Many of us carry our conversations to lunch at the nearby Brookings Institution.

Attire is business casual, recruiters are often present, so we ask all Monday Speaker attendees to contribute to the professional standards and objectives of this important networking meeting.

Doors open at 9:30 for networking and the program starts promptly at 10:00.
