Empowering Experienced Professionals for Successful Career Transitions

Statement of Support:

As an organization that empowers experienced professionals, managers, and executives for successful career transitions, 40Plus of Greater Washington serves professionals of all races and ethnicities. We stand firm in our support of all people who have been affected by the horrendous racist and violent acts in our country.

We condemn the police brutality that led to the tragic and needless death of George Floyd, along with others before him such as Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile and Eric Garner. We also condemn the violence, bigotry and systemic racism that has occurred during the past 400 years, particularly against black men and women in our nation. Furthermore, we stand firmly against discrimination of any kind including age discrimination, which frustrates many of our members during their search for new employment.

We offer our condolences to the family of George Floyd, his friends and loved ones. As a way to honor his memory, we stand ready to work with other agencies and community-based organizations, along with the community at large, to end injustice in all its forms against the oppressed and all persons of color.

Moving from Emotion to Action: Why Emotions Matter in Times of Transition

So often in life, as we have all now personally experienced, change happens. Sometimes we know the change is going to happen and we have a chance to prepare. Such as with a retirement or a planned move. Other times, we do not have much time, if any, to get ready. For example, getting laid off, a company restructure, a sudden illness or death of a loved one.…or a global pandemic.

When change happens, we naturally experience a myriad of emotions. And how we manage our emotions through change will determine how we react or act. If we are looking for work or making a career change and we get stuck in our emotions, then our effectiveness will be negatively impacted. So much so, that we may not be able to progress forward at all.

Using some basic Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) principles, we will explore ways to move from a place of inaction (negative emotion) to action (positive emotion). These are tools which you will find useful when job searching or changing careers as well as other times of transition.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jean L. Battersby is the founder of Catalyst Coaching and Consulting, delivering human resources consulting and professional coaching to small and medium-sized organizations and individuals in transition. For 30 years, Jean created award-winning, engaging workplaces through the delivery of best practice HR programs throughout the United States. In 2015, she launched her visionary business after experiencing her final transition out of the corporate arena.

Jean leverages her personal experience of being “downsized or outsourced” three times during her career to help others navigate through work life or personal life transitions. As a coach and mentor, she combines skills learned as a certified Master Neuro Linguistic Practitioner (NLP) with ontological coaching to propel clients forward to achieve success, fulfillment, and purpose. Both disciplines focus on the art of being as well as doing. This is a clear and important distinction to convey because both are necessary to achieve the results we desire.

Jean is a graduate of Texas A & M University, having received an MBA and BBA. She is a graduate of Dale Carnegie programs and is certified in several coaching modalities. Jean’s clients find her skillful, compassionate, and intuitive.
